MONTANO STREET

Aaron Bohrer, AIA   |   Archiscape

This leed gold certified, 1,254 square foot house, expresses a high degree of visual privacy on a street with frequent pedestrian traffic on a budget.

Located on a city infill lot, the design includes clerestory windows for natural light and ventilation and a beneficial spatial connection to an exterior room. Along the street, a high wall is designed to add monumentality. A void in this metal clad wall signals the entry into a sky garden courtyard.  The living room is composed of two rooms, one interior and one exterior.

On the street side of the building, the bathroom, office, and bedrooms have south facing clerestory windows to harvest daylighting. An example of daylighting is seen in the bathroom, where a color tile accent disappears into a wealth of daylighting. Despite its windowless exterior, the house interior is a surprise of openness and natural light.
